🌪️ Science Minute with Mary – Hurricanes

The Atlantic hurricane season runs from June 1 to November 30. That’s when big storms can form over warm ocean water. Sometimes, they start near Africa and travel across the Atlantic Ocean toward the Caribbean, the Gulf of Mexico, or the U.S. coast.

This year (2025), scientists expect more storms than usual:

  • 13–19 named storms

  • 6–10 hurricanes

  • 3–5 major hurricanes (the strongest kind)

Storm names this year: Andrea, Barry, Chantal, Dexter, Erin, Fernand, Gabrielle, Humberto, Imelda, Jerry, Karen, Lorenzo, Melissa, Nestor, Olga, Pablo, Rebekah, Sebastien, Tanya, Van, Wendy.

Fun fact: Storm names get reused every six years, unless a storm is so strong that its name is retired forever.

Remember:  Hurricanes are serious, but scientists watch them closely. By paying attention to forecasts, we can stay safe.
